7 day self guided holiday in Ancient Rural France

Here is our suggested 7 Night Itinerary for  for self-guided cyclists, whether groups or individuals! The itinerary INCLUDES one meal per day, bicycle hire, airport transfers and 2 Day Trips with a Support Vehicle (Albi and the Troglodyte village of Peyre including a view of the Millau bridge).  Cyclists ideally start in the morning after breakfast from the Magnolias and return to the hotel every afternoon or early evening, for a swim and a beer and gourmet dinner! The self-guided itineraries are designed to ensure that rides and activities are matched to different levels of fitness and interest in historical and other pursuits. During the July and August months, itineraries can can be enriched with historic, fun and gourmet events which take place each day and evening across the many villages of the area. The Abbaye de Sylvanes, for example, offers ancient and classic music displays performed by acclaimed international musicians. Local night markets and special light displays are also common at some of the ancient villages.

You are also welcome to design your own self-guided program for as many nights as you wish.  You are not restricted to having all of your meals at Les Magnolias or to including the 2 Day Trips (minimum 4 people) in your itinerary. You may simply wish to base yourself at Les Magnolias and hire our bicycles (or not!).  We are always happy to share our cycling route maps with you.

Day 1 – Coupiac

Arrive in Toulouse, own transport or airport pick-up and transfer to Les Magnolias.  Light own lunch at Les Magnolias terrace.   Bicycle kit out and swim at Les Magnolias.    Optional late afternoon Coupiac 18 Green route (slight climb through mountain and forest road).  Dinner at Les Magnolias.

Distance: Optional 18 kms, Overnight: Les Magnolias – DB&B

 

Day 2 – Ambialet

Breakfast at Les Magnolias. Depart on Ambialet 40 Green route (forest, mountain and Tarn river ride).  Own coffee stop at Ambialet Cafe De La Presqu’ile.  Visit Ambialet’s ancient Franciscan monastery and impressive Roman church.  Return ride to Les Magnolias along Tarn river.  Lunch stop at l’Oustal.  Swimming and chilling at Les Magnolias.  Own dinner at Les Magnolias.

Distance: 40 kms, Overnight: Les Magnolias – BB&L

 

Day 3 – Brousse-Le-Chateau

Breakfast at Les Magnolias. Depart on Brousse 52 Green route (forest, mountain and Tarn river ride). Coffee stop at Lincou or Brousse.  Explore the Brouse Le Chateau village, its chapel, cemetery and impressive chateau.  Own lunch at Brousse. Return ride via flat Tarn or mountain route.  Relaxing at Les Magnolias pool and terraces.  Dinner at Les Magnolias.

Distance: 52 kms, Overnight: Les Magnolias – DB&B

 

Day 4 –  Combret

Breakfast at Les Magnolias. Ride to the characterful village of Combret, through beautiful forest scenery.  Mix of hilly, flat and forest ride.  Coffee stop at Posthoumy, view of the Statue Menhirs. Lunch at Combret.   Return ride via St Christophe and the ancient “lost” village of Cayla.  Relaxing at Les Magnolias. Own dinner at Les Magnolias.

Distance: Optional 50-70 kms, Overnight: Les Magnolias – BB&L

 

Day 5 – Own day

Chilling out around Plaisance, walking or canoeing on the magnificent Tarn river (with river picnic lunch).  Lunch/dinner at Les Magnolias/nearby village resturant TBD.

Distance: As desired if at all! Overnight: Les Magnolias – BB&L/D

 

Day 6 –  St Affrique, Millau bridge and Roquefort cheese caves

Breakfast at Les Magnolias.  Drive with bikes to St Affrique’s charming fresh produce market.  Ride 35 kms from St Afrique to the troglodite village of Peyre, via the stunning St Rome Sur Tarn.  Beautiful long ride along the Tarn river, past quaint old farmhouses and lively local rural activity.  Own lunch/picnic at Peyre.   View of the tallest cable-stayed bridge in the world from Peyre and drive to the Roquefort cheese caves.  Optional tour of the caves. Return to Plaisance.  Dinner at Les Magnolias.

Distance: 35-45 kms, Overnight: Les Magnolias – DB&B

 

Day 7 – Albi

Breakfast at Les Magnolias.  Depart on Albi 43 Yellow route (Mountain, forest and river ride).  Coffee stop at Ambialet’s Hotel Du Pont/other.  One of most picturesque rides of all, past rural farmhouses, through forest and beautiful river scenery.  Pick-up at Arthes close to Albi.  Own lunch at Albi’s ancient village centre.  Visit Albi World Heritage Site attractions: Albi Cathedral, Toulouse Lautrec museum, Palace gardens.  Walking and shopping in old Albi town.  Return to Plaisance.  Optional  32 km return ride.  Special dinner at Les Magnolias.

Distance: 45-90 kms, Overnight: Les Magnolias – DB&B

 

Day 8 Departure

Breakfast at Les Magnolias.  Depart Toulouse Blagnac airport.
